Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)
Available from herbalhighs.co.uk in crushed or extract form.
The hallucinogenic properties of the iconic Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) have been studied and explored for centuries. The species has a long history of use in religious and shamanic rituals, especially in Siberian culture. The main psychoactive properties of Fly Agaric can be found in an alkaloid compound named Muscimol, a potent and naturally occurring component of the mushroom. Other practical uses include treatments for sore throats, arthritis, and as an analgesic (painkiller).
Literary academics believe Lewis Carroll’s hookah-smoking caterpillar in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was inviting her to take a bite from a Fly Agaric, and its colours are thought to have been the inspiration for Santa Claus’s red and white suit. It has even been suggested that the basis of Christianity was formed by scholars, priests and cults using Fly Agaric.
